Katie Perkins | The Teen With a Golden Swing
For some, golf it’s a relaxing day on the green. For Katie Perkins, it’s life.
“I started when I was six years old,” Katie recalled. “I loved the atmosphere of it, so I told my dad I wanted to try it and he signed me up for golf lessons.”
12 years later, Katie is a three-time state champion and helped guide the Desert Hills High School girls golf team to four consecutive state titles. Despite all the success, Katie humbly said she still has room for improvement.
“I can always get better,” Katie said. “I can always make new goals. It was never just the best I could do.”
That’s because Katie said golf is a sport where you compete against yourself, always striving to get the ball closer to the hole.
Katie credits a lot of her drive and passion to her family. She grew up watching her older brother swing the clubs, and said her parents have always supported her endeavors. She says golf is something she can do with her family, for the rest of her life.
With enthusiasm, Katie remarked she has the best coaches, who have always been there to push her along. Desert Hills High School girls golf coach Laurie Dyer said it’s not hard to be on Katie’s side.
“She has what we call the ‘it’ factor,” said Dyer.
Katie will take that ‘it’ factor with her to college. She has accepted a full ride athletic scholarship to Utah Valley University, but to Katie the greens of Southern Utah will always be home.
“Growing up here, you get to know the pros and they’ll help you out,” said Katie. “It’ just year round. It’s so awesome.”
